Howard to give demonstration

by Jimmie Lee Buehler

John Howard, popular teacher of many Ridge Art Association (RAA) members, will demonstrate for the 82-yearold organization on Sunday, March 14, at 1 p.m., in the west room of Ridge Park field house, 9625 S. Longwood Drive. His subject will be a bridge over water in the autumn.

Howard received his formal art education at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. He is a member of the Town and Country Art League, the American Watercolor Society and the American Transparent Watercolor Society.

Howard taught for a year at the Latin School of Chicago. Since 1985, he has taught art at Moraine Valley Community College, in Palos Hills, and the Trinity Lutheran School, in Burr Ridge. To promote Moraine Valley, he was pictured on billboards at 111th Street and Cicero Avenue and at 159th Street and Route 45, asking, “Do you know where you are going?”

The Oak Lawn Park District commissioned Howard to paint 10 historical sites for its permanent collection. He also created a mural for Intersport Television in Augusta, Ga., and a mural for the O’Hare Hilton in Chicago. His work has been admired in several shows, including the Clausen Gallery, in Kenilworth; Wilmette Festival of Arts, in Wilmette; Galerie Koster, in Schrol, Netherlands; and the Whitlock Gallery, in Douglas, Mich.

Cavalierly, Howard allowed ladies from the audience to make the final brush strokes at his last two demonstrations. Will he do this again? And who will she be? Or will he extend the privilege to a gentleman this time?

Members are encouraged to enter the Back of the Halls competition, and the Country Store will reopen at RAA on March 14.

Refreshments will be served. Admission is $3. For more information, call (708) 460-2259.
