Neighborhood enjoying opening of Sweet Freaks

Sweet faces found sweet treats during a recent visit to the candy shop of Sweet Freaks Catering and Candy, which opened April 18 at 9915 S. Walden Parkway. As Maya O’Neill (from left), Elyse and Rachel Piechocki and Mia Thorne discovered, Sweet Freaks is the neighborhood’s best place for handmade chocolates. Beverly resident and owner Pat Murphy, a trained chef with 25 years experience, has loved cooking since he was 8, and after leaving a successful career in the financial world, he trained at the Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago in the early 1990s and worked all over the country. After discovering that chocolates on the market didn’t satisfy his tastes, he decided to make his own. Since 2002, he has been perfecting his recipes for chocolate treats. When Sutherland Elementary School was organizing a wine and cheese reception several years ago, one of the committee members mentioned that a local dad “does amazing chocolates.” He accepted the invitation to serve his creations at the event, and they were so good that word quickly spread, bringing increased orders. Murphy said that his creations are handmade with the highest quality ingredients. The delicious truffles are sinfully rich. Sweet Freaks uses premium chocolate as a base and then infuses flavors to create its creamy centers. The truffles are then coated in mini chocolate chips, chocolate or crushed nuts—the combinations are mouth-watering. It has flavors such as double chocolate, coffee, lemon and orange sorbet, plus, Grand Marnier-infused truffles, Jagaer truffles coated in premium chocolate, Irish Creme truffles and Chambord truffles. The store also has homemade “Jakes,” which are similar to a chocolate turtle. The creamy caramel is made from scratch. Pecans are laid on a bed of milk chocolate; then a generous dollop of delicious handmade caramel covers the pecans, and finally the caramel is covered by more milk chocolate. Chocolate-covered strawberries, cherry bites and hand-dipped pretzels are also popular. Murphy also operates Sweet Freaks Kitchen at 4428 W. Midlothian Parkway where he serves up culinary creations for diners and does catering orders in his professional kitchen.
