Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church
Churches around the world are commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 9401 S. Oakley Ave., is using this anniversary as an opportunity to rediscover what it means to be a Lutheran Christian.
During Lent, the congregation will be using Martin Luther’s technique of asking “What does this mean?” to study the basic tenets of the Christian faith. They will be using Luther’s Small Catechism, a brief guide to the faith in question and answer format. It focuses on the Ten Commandments, the Apostles’ Creed, the Lord’s Prayer and the sacraments of baptism and Holy Communion.
The study sessions are open to all. One section meets on Wednesdays at 7:45 p.m. A second section meets on Thursdays at 10 a.m. On Wednesday evenings the church serves a free soup supper starting at 6 p.m. followed by Lenten worship at 7 p.m.
