Kennedy Park, 11320 S. Western Ave., is making a splash this summer with a new pool schedule for 2016. The pool opens on Friday, June 17, at 7 a.m.

Most notably, the enhanced schedule features large blocks of time for family swim during the peak hours of the day. In addition, Kennedy Park will also be one of three pools throughout the city that will have an extended schedule into the end of September.

Pool passes and lap swim passes are available online. If purchased online, the receipt and photo ID will need to be brought to the park beginning June 13 to receive the pass. In-person registration for pool and lap passes will begin June 13; in-person registration can be purchased Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The new schedule is the result of a successful collaboration between the Chicago Park District and local residents to make the pool more accessible to families, seniors, children and lap swimmers.

The Southwest Side has lost several private pools over the past few years. Fortunately, the park district, under the direction of Superintendent Michael Kelly, made a significant investment and improvement to the pool a few years ago by installing a heating system. These improvements made the pool one of Beverly/Morgan Park’s true hidden gems.

New Park Area Manager, Ed Affolter, has brought energy and enthusiasm to local parks and was instrumental in the continued efforts to improve the Kennedy Park pool for all users.

In addition, Mary Jo Viero is spearheading a community group for Kennedy Park that will assist in advocating for community improvements.
