Lake Katherine Nature Center and Botanic Gardens, 7402 W. Lake Katherine Dr., in Palos Heights, will host a session on gardening on Wednesday, Aug. 28, from 1 to 2 p.m. for children in grades kindergarten to second, and from 3 to 4 p.m. for children in grades three to five.
Participants will hike to see Lake Katherine’s different gardens and then create a garden collage. The event includes a project to grow lettuce in a bag.

Sprint like a cheetah or take your time like a sloth at Brookfield Zoo’s annual ZooRunRun for the Animal Care and Conservation Fund, which is dedicated to protecting animals around the world, on Sunday, Sept. 8.
The course is entirely inside the zoo and features a 5K chipped-time race and a one-mile chipped-time Kids Dash for children 13 and under.
Prices range from $20 to $40, plus a $3 sign-up fee.

A homemade pizza class will be held on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 1 to 4 p.m., at The Log Cabin Center for the Arts, 12700 Southwest Hwy., in Palos Park.
The class will meet Lois Lauer in the garden to pick tomatoes and herbs and then proceed to the Anderson Center kitchen. The group will use a tomato press to extract the juice and pulp from the tomatoes and then cook it down into a thick tasty pizza sauce.
While it’s cooking, participants will create homemade pizza crusts and then assemble a mini pizza that is ready to take home and bake for supper. The group will also taste-test a pizza before the end of class.
Participants are asked to bring a box or basket for carrying home a six- to eight-inch pizza.
Class fee is $20 plus a $6 materials fee.

A card-making workshop will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 21, from 1 to 3 p.m.
Instructor Janice Schmid will show students how to use rubber bands, coffee filters, painters tape, graphite paper, tissue paper, stamps and inks to create cards.
The workshop fee is $20 plus a $7 materials fee.

Participants will create paper with pressed flower petals, having cooked plant leaves and stems within the paper pulp.

Chicago’s JazzWorks Keeping Jazz Alive will host a concert on Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Beverly Woods Banquet Hall, 11532 S. Western Ave., from 7 to 10 p.m.

The concert will feature selections of jazz, hard bop and a special vocal performance by Justine Hopkins.

St. Bede will host an all school reunion on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 6 to 10 p.m., at 115 Bourbon Street, 3359 W. 115th St., in Merrionette Park. Although this is a reunion, all are invited to attend.
