SCC/Special Olympics Chicago will honor two longstanding supporters of the organization—Carey Pinkowski, executive race director of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, and the Shannon Rovers Irish Bagpipe Band—at a reception on Tuesday, April 23, from 5:30 to 9 p.m., at Carnivale Restaurant, 702 W. Fulton St.
Pinkowski and the Bank of America Chicago Marathon have been avid supporters of the Special Olympics Chicago organization for many years. The marathon has raised more than $1 million over the last decade to help support the athletes of the Special Olympics Chicago program.
The Shannon Rovers Irish Bagpipe Band have been supporters of the annual Chicago Polar Plunge, the largest fundraiser of the year for Special Olympics Chicago, since 2005. Each year, the Shannon Rovers donate their time and help lead the plungers into the water.
In addition, many of the members of the Shannon Rovers volunteer their time at various events and athletic competitions for Special Olympics Chicago athletes throughout the year, including the Spring Games.
Chicago is the birthplace of Special Olympics and is now held in over 170 countries worldwide, with over 5 million athletes with disabilities participating. Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children (ages 8 and older) and adults with mental disabilities or closely related developmental disabilities.
The Chicago Special Olympics Program is run through the Chicago Park District, Chicago Public Schools and various sister agencies. In Chicago, more than 7,500 athletes are involved in the program.
Since 1969, Special Children’s Charities has been the fundraising co-sponsor of Special Olympics Chicago, in partnership with the Chicago Park District. Special Children’s Charities mission statement is to promote, foster and encourage physical and mental health and improvement through athletics, recreational and social activities among youths and adults with disabilities.
Tickets for the reception are $100 per person and include food, drinks and entertainment. Tickets may be purchased online at sochicago.org.
