Council Oak Montessori School (COMS), 2521 Grove St., in Blue Island, is enrolling new students for fall of 2019 and will host enrollment coffees every Wednesday throughout the summer.
The school offers “high-fidelity Montessori education” from preschool to middle school. COMS educators want to help people understand just what they mean by “high fidelity Montessori education,” and enrollment coffees are the perfect chance to do so.
Maria Montessori was an Italian physician and educator who developed a new method of teaching. The Montessori method, like any method, changes by interpretation and may be followed rigorously or loosely. COMS takes pride in its high-fidelity Montessori method.
COMS teachers are certified in Montessori methodology and techniques, and the executive director of the school, Lila Jokanovic, earned her Montessori certification from the Midwest Montessori Teacher Training Center and leadership training from Harvard University.
The many benefits of Montessori learning include mixed-age communities, hands-on learning methods and guided autonomy. These benefits, however, are just the beginning of what COMS offers. In order to understand the extent of what COMS can offer a child, schools officials believe it is important for families to visit the school and speak with the educators who work with the students every day.
