Nancy Mae Smith, of Morgan Park, died Sept. 29.
Visitation is scheduled for Oct. 6, from 3 to 6 p.m., at Gatling’s Funeral Home. A wake will be held Oct. 7, at 10 a.m., at Morgan Park United Methodist Church. The funeral Mass will be at noon. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Smith was the former president of the Old Morgan Park Civic Association, a member and active participant of Parent Pac Association and the local school council of Esmond Elementary School. She served tirelessly for over 30-plus years with a hands-on approach as an ambassador for the school community.
Smith worked closely with faith-based organizations and local fire and police organizations as well. She had close bonds with former 19th Ward Ald. Ginger Rugai and 19th Ward Ald. Matt O’Shea. She also worked side by side with Dr. Angela R. Tucker, principal of Esmond School.
This leadership team and others worked to strengthen community partnerships with local agencies associated with mental health and domestic services, financial programs, food, clothing and shelter services, and after-school and educational programs for children and adults.
Smith was a political figure in the community who spoke up for all stakeholders. She made sure that people in positions of authority had a willing heart, never forgetting about the children in her school community. She served faithfully without hesitation to her school and community for well over 50 years.
Smith was happy to serve, and she will be thoroughly missed.
