Time flies when you’re having fun—or working hard—and while it doesn’t seem like 38 years ago that Gary Cooney opened Waldo Cooney’s, the decades have been great for this family business.

Gary is a former executive chef for a blue-chip corporation, and he opened this local favorite in 1981. Today, his son, Greg Cooney, is the general manager, and he takes pride in serving customers in Beverly/Morgan Park. Greg has been an important ingredient in the recipe that has made Waldo Cooney’s the best place in the neighborhood for local residents who love great cooking.

Although Waldo Cooney’s use of Facebook, Twitter and social media has taken off under Greg’s management, one thing has never changed in 38 years: amazing pizza.

Whether it’s Waldo Cooney’s authentic thin crust, gourmet stuffed pizza or any of the other menu items, everything’s delicious! Its reputation for outstanding quality is the reason Waldo Cooney’s is proud to be celebrating its 38th anniversary.

The Cooney Family has achieved success in the restaurant business by offering quality, value and service. Gary and Greg’s dedication to quality has allowed Waldo Cooney’s pizza to experience phenomenal growth over the past 38 years.

Along with general manager Jose Barrera, the staff serves customers at six locations: 2410 W. 111th St. (across from the Beverly Arts Center); 8541 S. Pulaski Ave.; 2640 W. 51st St.; 6715 W. 111th St. in Worth, and 3622 Ridge Road in Lansing. The sixth is a Waldo Cooney’s franchise restaurant—which is family owned and operated by Cyndi and Ed Nemec, who have decades of experience in the pizza industry—at 3651 E. 106th St., in Chicago.

All the locations feature pizza, calzones, sandwiches, appetizers, pasta, chicken, seafood, salads and desserts.

“Original” thin crust pizza or “Chicago Style” stuffed pizza are Waldo’s specialties. They’re awesome and filled with a choice from his long list of favorite ingredients.

Waldo has delicious specialty pizzas like the Supreme (sausage, mushroom, onions, green peppers); Bacon Deluxe (sausage, bacon, mushrooms, onions, tomatoes); Texas Special (sausage, onions, bacon and BBQ sauce); Vegetarian (mushrooms, onions, green peppers, tomato), or Hawaiian Deluxe (Canadian bacon, pineapple and BBQ sauce—a tropical delight!).

Calzone is another popular item on the menu. It’s a delicious pizza turnover filled with your favorite combination of toppings.

Sandwiches such as the Italian beef, Chee-zee beef, or BBQ beef are available as well as homemade meatballs topped with homemade marinara sauce.

Appetizers include cheese stix, garlic bread, Chee-zee garlic bread, tomato bread, jalapeno poppers, breaded mushrooms, French fries, onion rings and Buffalo wings.

Waldo’s also has chicken or chicken wing dinners served with toasty garlic bread, cole slaw and French fries. The chicken Parmesan dinner is tender breast of chicken baked under layers of mozzarella and Parmesan cheese, accompanied with spaghetti and topped with marinara sauce.

For pasta lovers, there’s spaghetti, ravioli (meat or cheese), mostaccioli, baked mostaccioli or baked lasagna. Meatballs or sausage can also be added.

Family-style pastas, served with homemade marinara sauce, tossed salad, garlic bread and grated cheese can be ordered to serve 3-4 people.

Seafood like the jumbo fantail shrimp dinner or perch dinner, served with toasty garlic bread, cole slaw and French fries, are popular. Shrimp and perch are also available by the pound.

Italian tossed salads with lettuce, red onion, cucumbers, tomatoes and carrots with choice of dressings (French, garlic, thousand island, Italian or ranch) are light and delicious as is the chicken breast salad.

Waldo even has gourmet cheesecake for dessert.

Catering for graduations, birthdays, retirements, anniversaries, reunions, weddings, company picnics, Sweet 16’s, team banquets, club meetings, Christenings and holidays is available at Waldo’s. The catering selections are all homemade. Nothing is frozen, always fresh!

People can choose beef, sausage, fried chicken, mostaccioli, lasagna, spaghetti, ravioli, chicken Parmigiana, tossed salad, macaroni salad, potato salad or cole slaw. Call to set up your next party.
