For more than three decades, Dr. Joe McCartin has established a reputation as a wonderful family dentist, and hundreds of Beverly/Morgan Park residents have been his patients for years and years—some even for decades.
His patients are always happy to refer their family and friends to Dr. McCartin, usually complimenting his warm personality, friendly staff and meticulous attention to detail. As a result, his dental practice, located at 10401 S. Kedzie Ave., in Mt. Greenwood, has thrived during the past 33 years.
Most dentists would be content to rest on such laurels. However, Dr. McCartin is not like most dentists.
Although every dentist must graduate from college and then dental school to become a dentist, Dr. McCartin’s credentials also include years of post-doctoral continuing education in order to stay abreast of the latest developments in dentistry.
Case in point is Dr. McCartin’s upcoming induction as an Associate Fellow at the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID), the oldest professional organization in the U.S. dedicated to the advancement of the dental-implant field. Dr. McCartin will be recognized for his latest achievement at the AAID annual convention in San Diego, Calif., in October.
To qualify for Associate Fellowship, Dr. McCartin completed a minimum of 300 hours of instruction in implant dentistry, performed implant cases and passed the Academy’s Associate Fellow two-part examination: written and oral/case.
Candidates must pass the written exam before applying for the oral/case portion, which is conducted by an expert panel of implant dentists who evaluate the candidate’s knowledge of and proficiency in surgical and prosthetic dental implant treatments. Both exams must be successfully completed within four years.
This prestigious membership formally recognizes Dr. McCartin’s expertise in the implant field.
Such an accomplishment is impressive by itself, but that Dr. McCartin also earned the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) Fellowship Award in July 2016 shows that he is truly dedicated to providing his patients the highest level of dental care.
The AGD Fellow Award is presented to dentists who provide the highest-quality dental care by remaining current in their profession. To earn this prestigious honor, Dr. McCartin completed 500 hours of dental continuing education, passed a comprehensive written exam and fulfilled three years of continuous membership in the AGD.
Although Dr. McCartin has invested much time and effort into continuing his education throughout his career, he’s not trying to impress his patients with his credentials; Dr. McCartin only wants to impress them with his good, old-fashioned personal service that has a foundation of vast knowledge, expertise and the use of the latest dental technology.
Nonetheless, Dr. McCartin’s credentials are impressive. He was born and raised on the South Side, and he is an alumnus of St. Margaret of Scotland Elementary School and Marist High School.
He earned his bachelor’s of science degree from Marquette University and then his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the Marquette University School of Dentistry.
Upon completion of dental school, he received an award from the faculty for clinical excellence. He was also inducted into the XI chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, which is reserved for the top 10 percent of the graduating dentists. In addition, he was nominated for Alpha Sigma Nu, the Jesuit Honor Society.
He has also trained at the Dawson Center of Advanced Dental Studies and has studied “The Art of Endodontics” with Dr. Steven Buchanan. He is also an alumnus of the Kois Center for Advanced Dental Education in Seattle, Wash.
Dr. McCartin is currently affiliated with the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, American Dental Association, Illinois State Dental Society, Chicago Dental Society, American Equilibration Society, Academy of General Dentistry, Academy of Laser Dentistry, the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain, and the Dawson Academy.
On staff with Dr. McCartin are his wife, Office Manager Suzanne McCartin, and their dedicated staff of Stella Talaga, Meagan Peterson, Aneta Mac and hygienist Michelle Madera.
The parents of three and grandparents of three, Joe and Sue take pride in the level of clinical care and technology at their office, but they’re also dedicated to providing a friendly atmosphere where patients feel like a member of their family.
Dr. McCartin provides the total range of services as a general dentist: implant surgery and restorations, invisible braces, and teeth whitening (one-hour laser). He treats tempormandibular joint disorder and occlusal disorders, and provides root-canal therapy (using the state-of-the-art Buchanan endodontic system), porcelain veneers, crowns, bridges, dentures, tooth-colored fillings, comprehensive dental hygiene and periodontal therapy (laser gum surgery).
Patients also get a big smile when they realize that modern dentistry doesn’t have to hurt. Dr. McCartin uses state-of-the-art equipment such as laser therapy, so his patients know their treatments will be pain-free and provide the best results.
Dr. McCartin has also been a loyal friend to the community through his donation of time, services and expertise for worthy charitable organizations.
