“The 2020 spring softball season was surrounded by a lot of uncertainty. From the very beginning, I knew that canceling spring sports was a possibility.
“In my heart, I was still hoping that things would work out. When the official news came out about my senior year ending, I was heartbroken.
“By far my favorite memory of playing softball at De La Salle was beating Mother McAuley in the beginning of my junior season. We had not had a victory against them in 15 years. Every single one of us dug deep and came through. This had me very excited for the future of the team.
“Many players, including myself, were four-year varsity starters. We started off as a young team but kept getting better and stronger each year. The 2020 season brought a new direction with the announcement of Frankie Castagna as our new coach. She is a De La Salle alumna and former collegiate player at Lewis University.
“Castagna coached many of us when we were younger for travel ball. We were familiar, comfortable and excited with our new coach. She had started to create a new culture within the team that we were all looking forward to.
“I am fortunate to continue my athletic and academic career at St. Thomas. I take comfort knowing that I will continue to play after my high school years. However, my heart aches for my teammates, who will not have a proper goodbye on the field.
“I have learned many lessons during these trying times. The biggest is to play every game as if it is your last. No one really understands this until we are faced with a situation like the one we are facing now with COVID-19. 2020 will be one for the books.
“I know we will all come out of this much stronger than ever before. I take with me the great memories I have made at De La Salle.”
