“Softball is something I look forward to each year. Every school day in the spring, I would rush out of my last class to get ready for a challenging practice or game. I rarely slept in on Saturdays because there was always softball on Saturday, too!
“I would be getting to the field for early practice or rushing to catch the bus to play a doubleheader or heading to the field to fieldwork in preparation for a home game. And the thing is that I wouldn’t have changed anything about it because I loved the routine. There was nothing better than the feeling of taking to field to play ball.
“All winter as I was in the gym doing workouts or in the weight room doing strength conditioning, I was looking forward to my last season of Mother McAuley softball. This year, I was going to be the captain. My senior season, unfortunately, the pandemic had other plans, and now there is no 2020 high school softball season.
“When I ran out on the field at the end of my junior year, a 6-5 nail-biter defeat against Richards in the regional semifinals, I never dreamed that it would be my last game ever in a McAuley uniform. I never imagined it would be the last time that I played on the dirt at McAuley. And, I never thought it would be the last time I would get a hit wearing the red and yellow.
“To think that I won’t have the chance to take the field as a Mighty Macs wearing No. 12, playing for Coach Kathleen Mixan and representing McAuley with my teammates, this spring is disappointing, to say the least. Our team had a lot of young talent this year, and I was looking forward to playing with them this season.
“But rest assured, I will be cheering them on next year while playing softball as a Green Knight at St. Norbert College.”
