A 19-year-old man from Chicago has been charged for a local carjacking in which the victim was dragged several blocks down Western Avenue.

Pharis Harris, of the 2100 block of West 63rd Street, faces one felony count of aggravated vehicular hijacking.

The Chicago Police Department Office of News Affairs said the incident occurred the afternoon of Nov. 14. Harris was involved in a traffic crash with a 67-year-old man on the 9900 block of South Western, police said, then took the victim’s vehicle by force.

Police said after the crash, the victim exited his vehicle to survey the damage; the offender then entered the driver’s side of the victim’s vehicle, and the victim attempted to re-enter through a passenger-side door. The offender fled south, with the victim hanging on to the open door before falling out on the 10200 block of South Western. The victim was taken to the hospital and treated for contusions and abrasions, and the offender continued fleeing in the vehicle.

Police said Harris was arrested at about 9 p.m. on Nov. 15 on the 6400 block of South Seeley Avenue.

He was due in court on Nov. 17.
