Steve Coyne

Chicago Police Department (CPD) Officer and local resident Steve Coyne started doing stair climbs in 2012 for health and sobriety reasons. After some research, Coyne found several climbs across the country for first responders and military vets. Coyne then started doing 15 to 20 climbs a year across the country, all for charity.

Coyne is competing in the World Police & Fire Games and has several 9/11 Memorial climbs coming up. Since starting these stair climbs, Coyne has raised more than $11,000 for several charities, lost 60 pounds, has six years of sobriety and a lot less stress. Even with the support of friends and family, Coyne’s out-of-pocket costs exceed $10,000 a year.

Coyne not only does these climbs as a civilian but also climbs in full police uniform representing the CPD and all injured and fallen first responders across the country. Coyne also plays the bagpipes at several opening ceremonies.

Community residents are asked to step up and help Coyne give back by attending the Climbing for a Cause event at 115 Bourbon Street, 3359 W. 115th St., in Merrionette Park, on Saturday, June 10, from 7 to 11 p.m.

The $30 ticket includes full dinner buffet, tap beer and wine. Entertainment will be provided by Jay Vanna, CPD.
