Linda Flippin turned her dream into reality a year ago.

And as her restaurant enters its second year after successfully managing the pandemic during its first, Flippin is looking forward to bigger and better things.

Flippin, of Beverly, runs Flippin Flavors, 1848 W. 95th St., with her husband, Brian. With a menu ranging from turkey hoagies to Philly sandwiches, they pride themselves on fresh, satisfying food—many based on Linda’s homemade jerk marinade.

“I’m a person who can go to a restaurant and taste my way through something,” Linda Flippin said. “If I like it, I’ll go home and make it. ... I just have a gift.”

The Flippins opened their restaurant in April 2020, just as the pandemic was closing similar businesses. The couple lives on Longwood Drive, and as Brian was driving home one night, his wife said, he saw a vacant storefront on 95th Street.

The space needed work, but Linda knew right away it could be the future home of Flippin Flavors.

“I walked in,” Linda said. “I was just like, ‘You know what? This is it.’”

Linda’s always had a knack for seasoning food, she said, and friends will often ask her to prep their meats. She once drove around selling her marinade, hoagies and other products to customers, and after she and Brian married in 2015, she began to consider expanding her businesses.

She originally just wanted a commercial kitchen, a place to prepare her food in large quantities.

However, the property on 95th Street is zoned for restaurant use, so she soon had her own sit-down restaurant that also allowed her to prepare large orders. She employed people who needed work during the pandemic, and on opening day, a line of customers extended around the block.

The Flippins have also donated to homeless shelters and worked with city schools to make sure students had meals. Linda quipped that if anyone looks in her kitchen garbage cans, they’ll just see empty boxes—not leftovers, because she will find someone who needs to be fed.

“I definitely have a heart to give and to help those in need,” said Linda, who hails from Hyde Park. “I don’t know how to cook for one person. ... I love to treat people the way I want to be treated. No food is going to go to waste.”

The Flippin Flavors menu also includes Caesar salad, Greek salad and the signature jerk salad. Vegetarian options are available. The Flippins don’t use substitute meat, they just grill and season their vegetables.

The couple strives to keep their menu healthy, and they don’t sell fries but do offer chips.

“People really come here, they eat their sandwich, and they’re full,” Linda said. “We put 5 ounces of meat on every sandwich, and so you’re always going to consistently get the same sandwich. I think that that’s really important.”

Erin Ross, executive director of the 95th Street Beverly Hills Business Association, is excited that Flippin Flavors has found a niche in the community.

“I have been so impressed by the energy that Flippin Flavors has brought to 95th Street,” Ross said. “Linda Flippin and her team have tremendous focus on producing the best food possible for their customers. They are committed to serving their customers and to helping those less fortunate as well. The 95th Street Business Association is thrilled to have Flippin Flavors in its business district.”

Linda Flippin said she is grateful her restaurant has found early success, including during the holidays.

The winter was a pleasant surprise.

“Even during times that restaurants are normally slow, Flippin Flavors has been busy,” Linda said. “Whether it’s Thanksgiving, and you think that people are going to get Thanksgiving food—no, they were still at Flippin Flavors the day before Thanksgiving, getting their food, so that, as they’re cooking, they can eat Flippin Flavors. When we were cooking those big orders for Christmas, [businesses] couldn’t have office parties, [but a customer] would say, ‘I just want to give my staff some food.’

“We’ve been blessed.”

Flippin’ Flavors is open from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturdays.
