Father Perez Knights of Columbus Council 1444 members and volunteers crowned nine free throw champions at its annual Knights of Columbus International Free Throw Championship for boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 14 held recently at Br. Rice High School. Forty-eight aspiring players aged 9 to 14, 7 girls and 41 boys, competed.
The contestants vied for the championship within their gender and age-group. Each shooter took 3 warm-up tries and then 15 consecutive free throws. The competitor with the most made attempts in each group earned the Council Championship.
The nine Council champions advance to the District Championship scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 19, at St. Christopher Parish School, in Midlothian. The district winners will then compete for the Regional Championship on March 12 at St. Christopher. Regional champions will qualify for the state championships. Those winners advance to the state championship event.
The 2023 Council champions include 9-year-old Lucia Scarsella and Dave Kemps; 10-year-old Cody Carrig; 11-year-old Kayla Bresnahan and Bobby Duggan; 12-year-old Anthony Dedina; 13-year-old Nora Dunn (2022 Council Champion) and Liam Dalton; and 14-year- old James Lee.
According to Perez Grand Knight Matt Stevens, councils have sponsored the Knights of Columbus International Free Throw Championship for boys and girls since 1972.
“Sir Knight John Mikrut organized and conducted another wonderful event for our community’s youth,” Stevens said.
“Fifteen Brother Knights and friends and District Deputy Sir Knight Louis Vidales and State Free Throw Co-chairman Sir Knight Joseph Frontera lent their time and talents to the event.”
Father Perez Council is one of 17,000 Knights of Columbus councils that make up the world’s largest Catholic fraternal service organization. Founded in 1882 to assist working-class and immigrant Catholics in the United States, today the approximately two million members of the Knights put their faith into action through a broad range of charitable causes locally, nationally, and internationally with financial contributions and hands-on service.
