Mary Kathleen “Kay” Lennon, 84, of Beverly, died Feb. 12.

Funeral services were held Feb. 20 from Donnellan Funeral Home to Christ the King Roman Catholic Church. Interment followed at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

She is survived by her siblings, Michael (Maureen), Timothy (Kathleen), Nancy (Frank) Schaefer, James (Connie), Jean (Patrick) Johnson, Geraldine Gainer, Kevin (Lynn) and Patricia (Marvin) Bates; 30 nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

Lennon was the first of 10 children. Her parents, Michael and Mary, moved from Ireland to America in the 1920s, settling on the South Side in the parish of Visitation Roman Catholic Church.

Lennon was the first college graduate in the family, earning her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from DePaul University. In her earliest school years, she established a high level of scholarship that would guide her brothers and sisters in their education to pursue a wide range of careers in business, education, public service, government and the arts. That pioneering spirit is Lennon’s legacy and is now further reflected in the second and third generations of the family.

She loved traveling, visiting Europe, South America and places in the United States. She was a longtime resident of New York and Boston before retiring and returning to Chicago where she was active in family affairs.

Lennon hosted an annual Christmas gathering. Her generosity to her large extended family was continuous.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to support the Michael and Mary Lennon Family Scholarship Fund that has been established for the education of children at Visitation Elementary School, 900 W. Garfield Blvd., Chicago, IL 60609.
