Thank you, Scott Reeder, for your excellent column (June 9) published in The Beverly Review.
We are so often bombarded with the viewpoint that we are “past racism” or that to talk about white privilege is somehow destructive to our society or “the American way.”
Well, maybe it is because white privilege is the foundation of our country.
I am a Roman-Catholic nun, and our congregation (the Sinsinawa Dominicans) has been working on being an anti-racist group for many years. Our latest effort is that all our sisters are reading and discussing Isabel Wilkerson’s book, “Caste.”
Her book is so timely and challenging, and it reminds us that so much work still has to be done to bring about a just society in the United States.
Anyway, thanks again. I really appreciated your view and hope that other readers may gain some insight into the challenge that we face together.
